1973 Enamels
Shell Promotional Bugeye
|
Well, the best things sometimes come to an end. The folks at Hot Wheels decided to change paint schemes from the Spectraflame paints they had used for five years to enamel paints in a cost cutting move (so we are told). Kids walked away in droves and sales plummeted. The combination of slow sales and also paint that chipped very easily makes it very difficult to find these cars in decent shape. The prices for near mint versus mint cars are hugely different, so be prepared if you are going after the cleanest cars.
We here at the hoard sold off a ton of these cars a couple years ago that were in decent shape for some unknown reason! This caused the hoard to be lacking in these castings. Slowly they are being replenished. The cars are divided into two categories, normal store run cars and Shell Promotional cars. Hot Wheels ran special cars in a promotion with Shell gas stations in 1973.. The cars were a bit different, with less detail, but still normal redlines. |
